American Vogue and the Discovery of American Fashion
Presented by - Dr ANNA LEBOVIC, Arts Society Lecturer
Although dozens of editions of Vogue magazine have now flourished throughout the world, the very first issue was published in New York in 1892. As the first antecedent, American Vogue continues to command unparalleled respect and adoration, and is one of the world’s most influential magazines. But
how much American fashion was actually featured in the magazine itself? This lecture explores the early history of Vogue magazine and its emergence on the world stage, yet also why very few American designers were featured in America’s preeminent fashion magazine until the 1970s. It also considers what this reveals about the American fashion industry more broadly for much of the 20th century.
Raffle prizes for this lecture will be the following books:

The raffle is drawn at the conclusion of the lecture.
